Traffic lights first used

In the late 19th century, British politicians had trouble turning their carriages safely into the Palace of Westminster. In response, the Metropolitan Commissioner of Police, Richard Mayne, organized the introduction of a traffic control system of red and green gas-powered lights. They came into operation on 10th December, 1868. the lights were controlled by a lever at the base but its operation was unreliable. Just a few weeks after the control's installation, a police officer was injured when the apparatus exploded. The lights were unpopular and remained in service for only a few years.
